Parque Punta Sur

Following our snorkeling expedition which was the beginning of our jeep tour, we drove down to the South of the island and headed to a national park called Punta Sur. It's an ecological park that covers the reefs, beaches, lagoons, and the low forest of the surrounding area (thanks Wiki).

Après notre session scuba qui débutait notre tour de Cozumel en jeep, nous avons pris la direction de la pointe Sud de l'île et sommes allés dans le parc national de Punta Sur. C'est un parc écologique qui héberge des récifs, plages, marécages et des forêts adjacentes (merci Wiki).

The Celarain lighthouse has 127 steps (no we didn't count them) and gives you an amazing panoramic view of Cozumel. Down the lighthouse there's a navigation museum where you can learn a bit more about the Mexican's navigation history.

Le phare de Celarain a 127 marches (non nous ne les avons pas comptées) et en haut nous avons pu admirer une vue panoramique de Cozumel. En bas du phare, il y a un musée de la navigation où nous avons pu en apprendre plus sur les techniques et coutumes des navigateurs Mexicains.

The "Parque Punta Sur" also has wildlife to observe! There's a crocodile reserve (more than 500 crocodiles live there) and during the migratory birding season (around May) you can see a lot of birds in the lagoon.

Le "Parque Punta Sur" contient aussi des habitants plus ou moins sympathiques à observer (suivant les goûts). Il y a par exemple plus de 500 crocodiles qui vivent dans les marécages et pendant la migration des oiseaux (aux alentours de Mai) il y a un grand nombre d'oiseaux à voir.

Across from the crocodile's lagoon, there's a small Mayan ruin called "Tumba del Caracol" also know as Shell Tomb. This Mayan ruin is dedicated to Ixchel and it was used to announce hurricanes through a whistle effect and could send signal to the mainland to alert the population.

En face des marécages, il y a une ruine Maya appelée "Tumba del Caracol" et dédiée à Ixchel. Ce monument était utilisé pour prévenir les ouragans par un sifflement et pour envoyer un signal à la population du continent principal.
